Ukraine, US, and Russia Hold Tripartite Talks Opening New Possibilities for End of Russia-Ukraine War

Jan 26, Kathmandu - A tripartite negotiation involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia has opened new avenues toward ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that the security assurance document proposed by the United States is now fully prepared.

The document, developed after two days of negotiations, involved high-level political and military representatives from all three countries. President Zelensky noted that the only remaining step is to agree on the signing date. Once signed, the document will require approval from the U.S. Congress and the Ukrainian Parliament.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is progressing toward its goal of joining the European Union by 2027, describing this as a crucial foundation for the country’s ‘economic security guarantees.’ The negotiations took place in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

He also acknowledged that fundamental disagreements between Russia and Ukraine remain unresolved. Ukraine has insisted that respecting its territorial integrity is an essential condition. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated during talks with American officials that Ukrainian forces must withdraw from regions in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia.

According to U.S. officials, all parties emphasized the need for flexibility in reaching an agreement. Discussions also covered military and economic issues, including the management and oversight of Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control.

The next phase of the tripartite talks is scheduled to take place in the UAE on February 1. Experts hope these negotiations will lead to a long-term resolution of the ongoing full-scale conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
