Feb 01, Kathmandu - A significant technical failure has led to a nationwide power outage across Ukraine, prompting officials to describe the incident as an emergency crisis within the country's energy system.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported on Telegram that the issue began at 10:42 AM local time. The disruption affected key transmission lines connecting Romania and Moldova, as well as the main transmission lines between western and central Ukraine. This simultaneous disconnection caused a cascading power cut across the grid, activating automatic safety systems at substations.

Shmyhal stated that some units of nuclear power plants have been temporarily unloaded, and emergency power cuts have been implemented in the affected regions. The outage has severely impacted industry, government offices, transportation, and residential electricity services.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that metro services have been suspended due to low voltage and urged residents to exercise caution.

President Volodymyr Zelensky assured the public that all necessary emergency response measures have been put into place and efforts are underway to restore power swiftly. He called on citizens to remain patient and composed.

Experts warn that this technical failure has placed immense pressure on Ukraine’s energy grid, potentially affecting critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and daily life. Government officials have deployed emergency teams to conduct system tests, inspect lines, and implement necessary improvements.

The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and underscored the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent similar failures in the future.
