Election-focused talks between Prime Minister Karki and UML Chairman Oli

Feb 05, Kathmandu- Prime Minister Sushila Karki and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli held a long-awaited election-focused meeting on Thursday, Falgun 21.

They held a long dialogue in Baluwatar on Thursday regarding the upcoming House of Representatives election.

UML Chairman Oli is saying that a peace and security environment has not yet been created for the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21.

The government, on the other hand, has said that 80,000 troops have been deployed for the election since Wednesday and that there will be no shortcomings in it now.

There was a long period of lack of communication between Karki, who joined the government after the Gen-G movement, and Oli, who left the government. But recently, efforts have been ongoing to create an environment of trust between the two.

Karki and Oli have already held three rounds of talks. During their meeting on Thursday, Oli had told the Prime Minister that the security challenge to make the election fearless, free and fair remains.

The candidates of the political parties have intensified their election campaigns. But the Congress and the UML have not yet fully engaged in the election campaign. During the meeting on Thursday, the Prime Minister assured Oli that no effort will be spared in ensuring the safety of voters, candidates and employees, according to his secretariat.

Oli, who entered Baluwatar at around 10:30 am, left after two-hour-long talks. Both the UML and the NCP are adamant that the elections should be held in a single phase.

In discussions with the Election Commission, the UML representative had said that it might be difficult to hold simultaneous elections across the country on Falgun 21 due to the weather. In such a situation, he was of the opinion that holding the elections in a single phase could be postponed for some time.

Meanwhile, the UML is also demanding that the Supreme Court quickly hear the writ petitions filed against it for the restoration of the parliament dissolved on Bhadra 27.
