Surge in Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Nepali Migrant Workers Returning from Abroad

Feb 12, Kathmandu - A recent study conducted by the ART centers at Bharatpur Hospital and Narayani Hospital in Birgunj has revealed a significant increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Nepali migrant workers returning from foreign employment.

The study, which screened 1,637 individuals, found that 102 of them were diagnosed with various STIs. Krishna Hari Sapkota, head of the ART centers at both hospitals, stated that among those infected, 32 had returned from working abroad.

Additionally, the study identified six individuals involved in sex work, 22 as their partners, 11 from the third gender community, and 31 others with different backgrounds.

Sapkota highlighted that the most common infection was gonorrhea, found in 88 cases. Other detected infections included chlamydia, cervical infections, and fungal infections.

Dr. Pramod Poudel, a senior physician at Bharatpur Hospital, emphasized that unsafe sexual practices are the primary reason behind the rising STI cases. He urged the public to practice safe sex and undergo regular health check-ups to prevent further spread.
