Feb 14, Kathmandu - The European Union Observation Mission (EU EOM) has announced that the recently held elections in Bangladesh were free, fair, and credible.
During a press briefing in Dhaka today, Chief Observer and Member of the European Parliament, Ivers Izabs, presented an initial report on the elections. He described the electoral process as a significant step towards restoring democracy and the rule of law.
"I can confirm that the 2026 parliamentary elections were genuinely competitive. Fundamental freedoms were respected," Izabs stated. "The legal framework governing the elections aligns with international standards. The Bangladesh Election Commission operated independently and transparently, earning the trust of stakeholders and ensuring a credible election."
According to the EU observers, the elections proceeded peacefully and smoothly, with election officials efficiently conducting voting and vote counting at polling stations.
However, the report also highlighted certain shortcomings, including limited participation of persons with disabilities, restrictions on women’s political representation, sporadic local political violence, and the spread of misinformation.
The observers further noted underrepresentation of indigenous communities and minorities in politics. Izabs urged Bangladesh to strengthen independent institutions, uphold human rights, and promote accountability.
