Feb 15, Kathmandu - Nepal’s dreams of a Super Eight spot have officially come to an end following a clinical nine-wicket defeat at the hands of the West Indies on Sunday. This marks Nepal’s third consecutive loss in the ongoing T20 World Cup, while the Windies have secured their place in the next round with a perfect three-for-three record.
Defending a modest total of 133, the Nepali bowling attack struggled to find breakthroughs against a powerhouse West Indian lineup. The Caribbean side chased down the target in just 15 overs, losing only a single wicket.
• Shai Hope: Anchored the innings with an unbeaten 60.
• Shimron Hetmyer: Added a blistering *46 ** to seal the win.
• Brandon King: Contributed a solid 22 before falling to Nepal’s Nandan Yadav, the lone wicket-taker for the Rhinos.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, Nepal posted 133/8 in their allotted 20 hours. While the top order struggled, Dipendra Singh Airee delivered a standout performance, scoring 58 runs off 47 balls.
With this knock, Airee became only the second Nepali player in history to score a half-century in a World Cup. Other notable contributions included:
• Sompal Kami: 26* runs
• Lokesh Bam: 13 runs
• Gulshan Jha & Aasif Sheikh: 11 runs each
The West Indian bowling attack was led by Jason Holder, who dismantled the Nepali lineup with a 4-wicket haul, supported by single wickets from Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, and Roston Chase.
With this loss, Nepal is officially eliminated from the race for the Super Eight. The team will look to salvage pride in their final group-stage match against Scotland this Tuesday.
