KP Sharma Oli Declares Election a Referendum on Nation’s Future: Building or Destroying Nepal

Feb 19, Kathmandu - Nepali Congress leader and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized that the upcoming elections are more than just a political event; they are a referendum on whether Nepal will continue to build its future or dismantle it. Speaking at the unveiling of the UML’s manifesto on Thursday, Oli described the election as a struggle between patriotism and betrayal.

“Ours is a nation that needs the energy of youth — that enthusiasm, dreams, and courage to climb any mountain. But alongside that, we also require the vision of experienced generations — wisdom, restraint, and guidance that can inspire youth when they falter. Youth is like fire, but fire needs direction; otherwise, it can burn everything down. Experience is like light — but even light needs energy, or it fades away. Only when fire and light come together can our country's future be bright,” Oli stated.

He further stressed that politics should unite all generations and move forward collectively. “This election is not just about changing governments; it’s about choosing between building Nepal or destroying it. It’s a struggle between patriotism and betrayal,” he declared.

Oli identified political instability as the greatest obstacle to the country’s prosperity and happiness. “Unity, cooperation, and responsibility are our hallmarks. The results of our efforts affirm this. The party that builds Nepal is the party that will lead Nepal,” he added.

Highlighting the priorities of the UML, Oli reaffirmed that the nation’s sovereignty and independence remain paramount. “Our primary focus is Nepal first — safeguarding our land, independence, democracy, constitution, and national pride. We are committed to constructive development, not reckless stunts,” he emphasized.

He concluded by asserting, “We stand as guardians of independence and sovereignty. Even in the face of attacks, we will not remain silent. Our goal is to restore peace and stability to a society living in fear and chaos. That’s why we stay away from reckless and directionless stunts.”
