U.S. President Donald Trump Announces Deployment of Hospital Ship to Greenland

Feb 22, Kathmandu - In a recent development, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of a large hospital ship to Greenland to provide medical aid to its residents.

Although he described this move as humanitarian assistance, it has further strained diplomatic relations with Denmark.

President Trump claimed on social media platform Truth Social that many people in Greenland are ill and are not receiving proper medical care, prompting the decision to send the ship.

The mission is reportedly coordinated with Jeff Landry, the Governor of Louisiana and the U.S. Special Envoy for Greenland.

Since the end of 2025, Trump has expressed his desire to incorporate Greenland into the United States. He previously warned that if Greenland was not ceded, heavy customs duties would be imposed on Denmark.

Officials from Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected Trump's proposal, stating that "Greenland is not for sale."

Denmark has not officially disclosed whether the deployment of the U.S. hospital ship was authorized or on what basis it was sent.

Analysts interpret this incident as part of a 'soft power' strategy to increase American influence in Greenland. Following Trump’s indication at the beginning of 2026 that military force could be used to control Greenland, tensions arose among NATO allies.
