Feb 22, Kathmandu - In a momentous achievement, Sahara Club lifted the trophy at Pokhara’s football ground for the first time in 13 years, rewriting history. The club secured a 2-0 victory over Jawalakhel in the final on Saturday, marking their second Gold Cup title and celebrating the tournament's 25th edition.
Jawalakhel’s dream of claiming the trophy was dashed, as they had previously fallen short in the final 14 years ago against Manang Marssyangdi Club with a 2-0 defeat.
A Second Triumph for Sahara
Celebrating the Silver Jubilee, Sahara’s luck shone brightly. The club advanced to the final through two tense penalty shootouts, defeating Nepal Police Club in the quarterfinals and Manang Marssyangdi in the semifinals.
In the final, Sahara sealed their victory with goals in both halves. Captain Shushil Lama played a pivotal role, providing crucial assists for both goals. The first goal came from a corner kick, where Mukundkumar Nire of Sahara Academy headed the ball into the net, giving them an early lead.
The second goal, scored in the 73rd minute, was a header by captain Shushil Lama himself, after a cross from teammate Tayo Dinyal Badaru, a tall defender. Throughout the match, Jawalakhel struggled to create significant scoring opportunities.
Gold Cup Journey
Having reached the final four times, Sahara took 13 years to secure their second title. Their first final appearance was in 2069 BS (2012 AD), followed by a victory in 2070 BS (2013 AD). They reached the final again in 2073 BS (2016 AD) but finished as runners-up.
Prize Money and Awards
Sahara received NPR 1,410,000 in prize money, while Jawalakhel was awarded NPR 710,000 as runners-up. Badaru was named the best defender. The tournament’s top scorer was Ibo Kebe from Planing Boys, with emerging star Mukunda Kumar Niure of Sahara, Debendra Kunwar of Jawalakhel Youth, Tiken Thapa of Sahara, and Abubakar Sisi of Jawalakhel also earning special recognitions. Each awardee received NPR 25,000. Mukunda Kumar Niure was also awarded an electric TAILG scooter as the Player of the Tournament.
