Hearing on Durga Prasai's Habeas Corpus writ today

Feb 24, Kathmandu - A hearing has been scheduled on the writ petition filed by medical practitioner Durga Prasai. The writ petition will be heard by a joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Meghraj Pokharel on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court had issued an order to withdraw the relevant file from the Attorney General's Office. The court ordered the file to be collected based on the written response sent by the District Police Range during the preliminary hearing on the writ petition filed by Prasai.

In Prasai's case, Uma Prasai had filed a writ petition against the District Police Range, Bhadrakali, Kathmandu and others. Before her arrest, Prasai had filed a writ petition on Falgun 1, demanding a stay on her arrest. The Supreme Court had sought written responses from the Election Commission and the District Police Range, among others, in that writ petition. The two writ petitions filed by Prasai are being heard together.

Prasai, who was arrested on Magh 23 earlier, was released on bail. At that time, the Cyber Bureau of the police had taken his statement based on his election-related statements as a basis for investigation.

The police have been arresting Prasai repeatedly on suspicion that he was planning to launch a campaign to disrupt the election scheduled for Falgun 21. Prasai, who was also arrested from Pokhara on Magh 23 earlier, was released after giving a statement.
