Nepal Announces Three-Day Public Holiday Ahead of Upcoming Federal Parliament Election

Feb 24, Kathmandu - In anticipation of the Federal Parliament elections scheduled for Falgun 21, the Nepali government has declared a three-day nationwide public holiday. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, covering Falgun 20, 21, and 22—just before, during, and after the election day.

The government took this step following the Election Commission’s recommendation to facilitate voters and election officials. The holiday aims to make it easier for employees, teachers, and private sector workers to participate in the voting process by allowing them to reach their home districts and villages.

As a result of this decision, all government offices, semi-governmental agencies, and educational institutions across the country will remain closed from Falgun 20 to 22. Many polling stations are located within schools, and teachers are expected to be involved in election duties, which will likely disrupt regular academic activities.

The Election Commission proposed the holiday to ensure 100% voter turnout and maintain security during the election. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, essential services will continue during the holiday, but other non-essential services are expected to be suspended to manage traffic congestion and security concerns during the election period.
