Government Bans Alcohol Sales and Consumption Until Election Results

Feb 26, Kathmandu - In a high-level bid to ensure a peaceful and credible voting environment, the Government of Nepal has announced a nationwide ban on the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol effective immediately through the conclusion of the upcoming elections.

The decision was finalized by the High-Level Election Security Committee, mandating that the restriction remain in force from seven days prior to polling until the official declaration of the final election results.

Key Deadlines and Enforcement

With the election just one week away, the government has set a strict timeline for security and conduct:

• Alcohol Ban: Effective immediately, lasting until the final vote count is announced.

• Silence Period: All election campaigning must cease by midnight on Falgun 18.

• Polling Day: Voting is scheduled to commence at 7:00 AM on Falgun 21.

Zero Tolerance for Violations

The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a directive to all Chief District Officers (CDOs) and security agencies across Nepal’s 77 districts to strictly enforce the Election Code of Conduct, 2082.

"The goal is to conduct the elections in a clean, reliable, and fear-free environment," the Election Commission stated. "Security assessments and guidelines are being strictly followed to prevent any untoward incidents."

Legal Consequences

Authorities have warned that any individual or establishment found violating the ban or the "Silence Period" will face immediate legal action under:

1. Section 24 of the Election (Offences and Punishment) Act, 2073.

2. Sections 17 and 18 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082.

District Code of Conduct Monitoring Committees have been mobilized to track violations. Any illegal activity must be reported to the Commission immediately following local-level intervention.
