China and Germany Reinforce Strategic Partnership Amid Global Tensions and Trade Challenges

Feb 26, Kathmandu - In a meeting in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirm their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership despite ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and trade disagreements. The leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening mutual trust and strategic communication in an era marked by global instability.

President Xi stated, “As the world becomes more complex and turbulent, China and Germany must bolster mutual trust and strategic dialogue.” Chancellor Merz responded by acknowledging that despite differences, both countries need to focus on shared objectives and face common challenges together.

The discussions primarily centered on the Ukraine conflict, trade deficits, and broader global economic issues. Notably, Germany’s trade deficit with China increased last year, with exports falling by 9.7% to €81.3 billion, while imports rose by 8.8% to €170.6 billion. Merz expressed optimism that agreements such as Airbus aircraft orders could enhance trade opportunities between the two nations.

Xi also highlighted the need for “shared participation” with Europe and Germany, emphasizing the importance of addressing mutual concerns through dialogue. Both leaders underlined the priority of resolving conflicts, enhancing security, and fostering economic cooperation.

During his two-day visit, Merz is also scheduled to visit a leading company in Hangzhou producing humanoid robots, showcasing China’s technological advancements. This visit, occurring ahead of his trip to Washington, holds strategic significance for understanding China’s technological capabilities and the evolving China-Europe relations amid international trade dynamics.
