25,000 Afghan Children in Temporary Camps after Earthquake

Feb 26, Kathmandu - Nearly 25,000 children are still living in makeshift camps in eastern Kunar province, Afghanistan, six months after an earthquake devastated the country, the international aid agency Save the Children said on Thursday.

More than 25,000 children have been forced to spend their childhoods in the camps, as families have been living precariously in tents. The report said that the level of destruction in some villages is so great that they may never be rebuilt, noting that the reconstruction of houses in mountainous areas has only just begun.

The earthquake has also been assessed to have had a serious impact on educational infrastructure, with more than half of the educational infrastructure completely or partially destroyed. According to the aid agency, about 50,000 primary school-age children in Kunar, the province most affected by the disaster, were already out of school before the earthquake.

A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31 last year, causing major damage in Kunar province, and is considered the deadliest natural disaster in the country's recent history.
