Mar 05, Kathmandu - Social media platform TikTok has announced that it will not implement End-to-end encryption (E2EE) in its direct messaging (DM) service. According to a recent report by BBC, the company has clarified that this technology will not be adopted.
TikTok stated that applying end-to-end encryption could compromise user security. The company explained that such encryption prevents law enforcement and security agencies from accessing message content when necessary, thereby increasing risks.
The decision, TikTok said, is aimed at distinguishing itself from competitors and particularly at ensuring the safety of young users.
With end-to-end encryption, only the sender and recipient can view the message content, preventing third parties from reading the messages.
TikTok assured that its direct messages are protected through standard encryption methods similar to the security systems used in services like Gmail. The company added that only authorized employees can access message content under specific circumstances, such as legal requests or reports of harmful behavior by users.
Currently, popular messaging apps such as Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Apple Messages, and Google Messages use default end-to-end encryption to secure user communications.
