Cinema Halls Face Dry Spell of New Nepali Films Amid Limited Releases

Mar 06, Kathmandu - Theaters across Nepal are currently experiencing a scarcity of new Nepali film releases. Due to the February 21 parliamentary elections, many producers had not scheduled release dates for the month of Falgun.

Although a few Nepali films did release in Falgun, they failed to achieve the expected commercial success. As a result, theaters are still running primarily old films.

At Nepal's largest multiplex chain, QFX, only two Nepali films are currently playing: 'Aa Bata Aama' and 'Ramita Ko Pirati', both released in Magh.

The recently released 'Prawasi Jiwan' was pulled from most QFX cinemas just days after its debut. Meanwhile, multiplex screens are showing a variety of foreign films, including Bollywood's 'O'Romeo' and English movies like 'Crime 101', 'Wuthering Heights', and 'Scream 7'.

At INI, the second-largest multiplex, only 'Aa Bata Aama' is still screening. Similarly, at W. Movies, Aa Bata Aama, Ramita Ko Pirati, and Parasi Jiwan are playing.

Despite the limited new releases, Parasi Jiwan was removed from most theaters shortly after its release, while Aa Bata Aama continues to run in its 36th day. The official box office earnings for Parasi Jiwan have not been disclosed, but Aa Bata Aama had grossed over NPR 12.3 million as of last Saturday. Its current earnings remain unpublicized.

Films released in Magh, such as Ramita Ko Pirti and Kumari, have also been pulled from many theaters. As per the latest figures, Kumari has grossed approximately NPR 648,000, and Ramita Ko Pirati around NPR 286,000.

Looking ahead, a new Nepali film is set to release this Friday, with Lalima scheduled for screening on Falgun 15.
