Nepal Approves Homegrown CAR-T Cell Therapy, a Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment

Mar 07, Kathmandu - In a significant milestone for Nepal’s healthcare sector, the country has officially approved the use of ‘CAR-T Cell Therapy,’ an advanced and cutting-edge treatment for cancer, developed domestically. This move marks a major step forward in utilizing modern biotechnological innovations within Nepal.

The Ministry of Health and Population recently granted permission to implement this innovative therapy, primarily targeting blood-related cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.

This treatment involves harnessing the patient’s own immune system. Specifically, T-cells are extracted from the patient’s blood, modified in laboratories to recognize and destroy cancer cells, and then reintroduced into the patient’s body.

The availability of this therapy within Nepal is expected to bring relief to cancer patients by reducing the need to seek expensive and often inaccessible treatment abroad. Previously, many patients faced financial and logistical challenges to access such advanced treatments overseas.

Health experts believe that developing this technology within Nepal is a major achievement for the nation’s medical research and healthcare system. It paves the way for further development of advanced medical treatments in the future, promising improved healthcare outcomes for Nepalese patients.
