Mar 08, Kathmandu - The Association of Nepali Origin (ANO) held a significant conference in Hong Kong on Saturday, raising awareness about the safety of Nepali nationals working in Middle Eastern countries. The gathering emphasized the urgent need for the Nepal government to focus on the security of its citizens in the region amidst growing global security challenges.
During the conference, delegates proposed that the Nepali government should prioritize safeguarding the safety of Nepali expatriates in the Middle East and take necessary initiatives. The assembly also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining unity among Nepali-speaking communities worldwide, regardless of birthplace or citizenship, by promoting Nepali language, culture, and identity.
The event was inaugurated by Arun Gurung, Hong Kong’s District Councillor and the first Nepali in that role, along with Chudamani Bhattarai, Secretary-General of ANO's International Committee. Nepali community members residing in Hong Kong participated actively, demonstrating solidarity and commitment to cultural preservation.
Speakers, including Bhattarai, Gurung, and ANO Central Member Khusi Gurung, highlighted the significance of connecting Nepali people globally and passing down their rich cultural heritage. The organization, led by Dilli Adhikari from the United States, was established in 2024 to promote Nepali identity and unity across the diaspora, regardless of where they live.
Furthermore, ANO is actively working to ensure that Nepali laborers, capital, and expertise worldwide contribute to Nepal’s development. The organization has also been advocating for policies to strengthen the connection between Nepali communities abroad and their homeland, urging the Nepal government to recognize and support their contributions.
At the event, a Hong Kong committee of ANO was formed, with Vicky Thapa elected as chairperson. The committee includes Vice President Ajay Rai, General Secretary Suku Limbu, Secretary Anuj Rokka, Treasurer Sofia Gurung, and spokesperson Suresh Yakso. Members also include Sarala Tamang, Toparaj Tamang, Rista Gurung, Mejila Gurung, Bhim Gurung, Junu Rana, Vinnie Lama Rai, and Karan Tamang.
The program featured cultural performances by senior leaders of the Tanahun Society Hong Kong, NRN Hong Kong, and finalists from the “My Voice Universe Season 2,” including Toparaj Negi Tamang and Vinnie Lama Rai, who extended their best wishes through music.
