Mar 19, Kathmandu - Dhading's local administrative bodies have urged the government to ensure the unhindered exercise of their constitutional rights. During a meeting held on Thursday, all 13 local units’ chiefs and deputy chiefs emphasized the importance of mutual respect, trust, cooperation, and coordination among the three tiers of government, in line with the spirit of federalism.
The meeting was chaired by Bhim Prasad Dungana, the chief of Nilkantha Municipality. Recently, newly elected Member of Parliament from Dhading-1, Ashika Tamang, issued directives to the local governments through social media, instructing them to cease illegal activities.
Notably, Tamang directed the immediate halt of illegal sand and gravel extraction from the Trishuli River in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-9, citing her authority as a representative elected from Dhading-1. She clarified, “As a representative of Dhading-1, I categorically state that any form of illegal tax collection, such as ‘Temporary Tax’ on roads within my constituency, will not be tolerated.”
This directive has sparked protests among local officials in Dhading. Tamang also issued a formal letter (No. 2850) on Chaitra 3, addressing the local authorities about her instructions.
In response, the local government representatives strongly condemned what they perceive as an attempt to undermine their constitutional authority and control. The joint statement issued after the meeting reiterated their resolve to resist any covert interference aimed at restricting their jurisdiction and called for respect for the autonomous powers of local governments.
