Investigation Finds Criminal Elements Behind Violence During Gen-Z Protest

Mar 26, Kathmandu - A commission led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, tasked with investigating the damage to public and private property during the Gen-Z protests, has revealed that criminal individuals were involved in the incidents on Bhadra 23 and 24. The commission submitted its findings to the government, highlighting the unlawful activities that escalated the unrest.

According to the report, the violence on Bhadra 24 was not orchestrated by the Jenji protesters themselves, but on that day, various age groups, including youth, spontaneously took to the streets in opposition to the events of Bhadra 23. However, the report states that some individuals with criminal intent exploited the situation, along with other looters, to carry out acts of arson, vandalism, looting, and even attacking security personnel and police, leading to chaos.

During these two days of unrest, 76 people lost their lives. The report specifies that 42 of the fatalities were caused by security forces firing live rounds. The remaining deaths occurred during looting incidents, with three police officers and others killed amid violent clashes.

The investigation further estimates that approximately 2,522 people, including security personnel, were injured during the violence. Additionally, the material damage caused is valued at around 85 billion rupees.
