Mar 26, Kathmandu - Lalitpur Metropolitan City has launched a new agriculture farm based on Korean technology, marking a significant step in modernizing farming practices in the region. The project, located in Ward No. 27, was established with the financial support of the city of Cheorwon in South Korea and is operated by the 'single women from the Chhahari community' group.
Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding, the municipality announced that the farm would be managed by the Chahari Women’s Group. Lalitpur and Cheorwon have shared a sister-city relationship for the past two years, aimed at fostering mutual cooperation and cultural exchange. This collaboration has now been extended to agricultural development, with Korean technology at the forefront.
The farm has leased approximately seven ropani of land for five years, where the group plans to cultivate crops suited to seasonal conditions. The initiative emphasizes utilizing advanced Korean agricultural techniques to enhance productivity.
During the launch event, Lalitpur Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan highlighted this project as a shining example of international cooperation between sister cities. He emphasized that prioritizing agricultural development and engaging women and youth in farming activities are key objectives. Mayor Maharjan also announced plans to develop a traditional Falcha (pati), reflecting Lalitpur’s art and culture, in Cheorwon.
Cheorwon Mayor Lee Hyun Joon expressed his satisfaction with the Korean-supported farm project in Lalitpur, promising further collaboration to create structures in Cheorwon that reflect Lalitpur’s cultural heritage.
Nepal’s Korean Ambassador Park Tae-young remarked that this initiative would strengthen the bilateral relationship between Nepal and Korea.
Ward No. 27 Chairperson Krishna Hari Maharjan expressed gratitude to Cheorwon city and emphasized that the project aims to empower women, youth, and single women, fostering self-reliance in the agricultural sector.
Chahari Women’s Group President Sabita Maharjan stressed the importance of women’s self-sufficiency in agriculture and called for a societal shift in perceptions that underestimate single women. She also highlighted the need to connect youth with farming to increase productivity.
