Mar 28, Kathmandu - Former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, along with former Home Minister and Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, are scheduled to be produced in court on Sunday as part of ongoing investigations.
Since the courts will be closed on Saturday, police will keep the two leaders in custody and present them before the court on Sunday for further investigation. The process will be facilitated through the Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office and the Kathmandu District Court.
Legal provisions allow police to detain Oli and Lekhak for up to 24 days for investigation, pending court approval, which is expected to be granted on Sunday. Meanwhile, police have prepared to house both leaders at the Armed Police Force’s Number 2 Battalion in Maharajgunj.
According to sources from the Kathmandu Police Range, after medical examinations, the two leaders are expected to be transferred to the Maharajgunj facility. They were detained by police early Saturday morning in Bhaktapur and subsequently taken to Kathmandu Police Headquarters and a hospital for health checks before being moved to the battalion.
Oli and Lekhak are currently being held at the Kathmandu Police Range. Their detention comes amid an investigation into the Gen-Z Movement protests held on Bhadra 23-24, which was initiated following a report by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki’s commission. The commission, led by Karki, found that negligence and recklessness contributed to the deaths during the protests and recommended legal action against then-Prime Minister Oli, then-Home Minister Lekhak, and Nepal Police’s then Inspector General Chandra Kuber Khapung.
The investigation is part of the broader effort to examine the circumstances surrounding the casualties during the Gen-Z protests, which have drawn significant political and public attention.
