Tensions Escalate in Kathmandu as UML Leaders and Activists Protest KP Sharma Oli’s Arrest

Mar 28, Kathmandu - Kathmandu's Maitighar-Baneshwor area experienced heightened tensions today as UML leaders and activists staged protests following the detention of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli. The demonstration led to clashes with police, who reportedly used baton charges against protestors.

During the crackdown, several UML activists, including Youth Leader Yubaraj Oli, sustained injuries. Authorities have deployed additional security personnel to maintain order amid ongoing protests.

Large-scale security arrangements are in place around Singha Durbar as protests continue. The unrest follows a series of protests by the Gen-Z Movement on Bhadra  23 and 24, which were suppressed at the time. During those protests, UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, then Prime Minister, and Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak served as Home Minister.

Currently, a group of protesters has gathered in Maitighar-Babarmhal, and another contingent attempted to march toward the South Gate of Singha Durbar, prompting police baton charges.
