Apr 02, Kathmandu - Member of the National Assembly, Mahantha Thakur, has remarked that although various political movements in Nepal have resulted in regime changes, they have not succeeded in transforming the lives of the common people.
Speaking at the National Assembly session, Thakur highlighted a significant gap between the patriotic spirit of the national anthem and the current reality of the country. He questioned whether Nepal’s sovereignty has truly been compromised, asserting that it has not.
Reflecting on Nepal’s political history, Thakur noted that protests and movements from 1997, 2007, 2017, 2036, to 2062/63 were not gifts but the result of thousands of sacrifices. Despite fighting for equality, independence, and nationalism, he argued that these values have not been reflected in practice.
Thakur also expressed discontent over allegations that those demanding rights are labeled separatists. He accused those in power of only raising the banner of nationalism when their own positions are threatened.
“The streets look good every ten years, temples and monasteries are maintained, but why do these conditions keep repeating? Because unemployment exists. Youths are forced to go abroad, only to return with failing kidneys,” he said.
Thakur further stated that despite the establishment of a republic, old powers continue to operate in secrecy, undermining the country's progress.
