Nepal Parliament Announces Schedule for Speaker Election Amid Political Developments

Apr 02, Kathmandu - The Parliament Secretariat has published the schedule for the upcoming election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The election is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Chaitra 22, at 11:00 AM during a designated parliamentary session.

According to the notice, the election will be conducted in accordance with Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure of the House of Representatives, 2079. The schedule was announced after senior members determined the date and time for the election process.

The notice states that nominations for the position of Speaker will be accepted on Friday, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Parliament Secretariat will publish the list of candidates at 2:30 PM on the same day.

If multiple candidates file nominations, the election will proceed on Chaitra 22. During the session, proposers will nominate candidates, and supporters will endorse them.

The process will include a collective discussion on nominations, followed by voting as per the order of registration. The Secretariat emphasized that the agenda will be to finalize the election through this procedure.

Currently, the ruling coalition, led by the National Independent Party, holds nearly two-thirds of the parliament seats with 182 members. The party has proposed D.P. Aryal, the party vice-chair, as a candidate. Today’s parliamentary group meeting decided to endorse Aryal as the candidate for the Speaker’s post.
