100 kidney transplants in 6 months at National Transplant Center

Apr 09, Kathmandu - the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in Bhaktapur has successfully performed 100 kidney transplants in just six months. Dr. Kalpana Kumari Shrestha, appointed as the executive director, announced that the center has reached this milestone under her leadership.

Currently, the transplant procedures are led by renowned urologist and kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Dipesh Shrestha. Since its establishment 13 years ago, the center has conducted a total of 1,606 kidney transplants and 36 liver transplants, despite limited resources. Dr. Shrestha shared that weekly, the center performs between four to six kidney transplants.
The center aims to perform 200 kidney transplants by the end of the 2082/83 fiscal year. Notably, nearly two-thirds of all kidney transplants in Nepal are carried out at this facility, underscoring its vital role in the country's healthcare.
Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, who served as the center's head for many years, retired recently, paving the way for Dr. Kalpana Kumari Shrestha’s appointment as the new executive director. Since its inception in 2068 BS, she has been a dedicated contributor and was also named among the "50 Influential Women" by OnlineKhabar.
