Germany to Resume Direct Talks with Iran

Apr 10, Kathmandu - Germany has expressed support for the recent two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran and has announced plans to restart direct negotiations with Iran.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz made the announcement during a press conference in Berlin, emphasizing that after longstanding tensions, there is now a genuine opportunity to pursue a diplomatic solution. However, he cautioned that the current situation in the Middle East remains highly sensitive and volatile, requiring careful handling.

A high-level German delegation has already traveled to Islamabad, where the US and Iran are scheduled to hold direct talks. Merz also spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via telephone to discuss preparations and coordination for the talks.

The German chancellor also had a telephone conversation with the US President, during which he urged the United States to take the negotiations seriously and play an active role in establishing long-term peace.

While Germany has positioned itself as a mediator, Merz clarified that there have been no discussions regarding the withdrawal of US troops stationed in Germany, indicating that security cooperation between Germany and the US remains intact.

Addressing the regional situation, Merz expressed deep concern over recent developments in Lebanon. He warned that ongoing military actions by Israel in Lebanon could jeopardize the newly initiated diplomatic efforts and warned against continued military escalation, which could negatively impact peace processes.

Germany views the current circumstances as a crucial diplomatic opportunity and has intensified coordination with international partners to seek peaceful resolutions.
