Tensions Escalate Between US and Iran Over Strait of Hormuz: New Disputes Emerge

Apr 12, Kathmandu - In the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, the main condition for a tentative ceasefire is the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. However, recent developments have sparked new disagreements between the two nations.

Iranian Parliament Vice President Haji Babai claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is fully under Iranian control. According to Mehr News Agency, he stated, “The Strait of Hormuz is a highly sensitive border for Iran. Ships passing through this route will now need to pay tolls in Iranian Rial.”

On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted on social media that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen soon. The U.S. Central Command announced that two of its warships had navigated through the strait and had begun removing explosive devices placed there.

Iran, however, has outright rejected claims that American ships have entered the waterway. According to Iranian state media, the Revolutionary Guards warned that any military vessel attempting to cross the strait would face a strong response. Following Iran’s warning on Saturday, Tehran claimed that an American warship had retreated mid-route.

During a press conference in Islamabad after hours of talks with Iran, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance did not discuss the Strait of Hormuz.
