Apr 12, Kathmandu - Pakistan has reportedly dispatched approximately 13,000 soldiers and several fighter aircraft to Saudi Arabia to bolster the kingdom's security. The Saudi Ministry of Defense issued a statement confirming the deployment of Pakistani fighter jets and support aircraft at the Abdulaziz Air Base in the eastern region.
The move aims to enhance military coordination, improve operational readiness, and support regional and international stability, according to the statement. Media outlets have reported that, under a joint strategic defense agreement signed last year, around 13,000 Pakistani troops and 10 to 18 fighter jets have been deployed to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia already hosts nearly 10,000 Pakistani soldiers, amid ongoing regional threats, including Iran's attacks following recent conflicts involving the US and Israel. Pakistan’s additional military support comes as the two nations have strengthened their defense ties, with Pakistan providing defensive assistance to Saudi Arabia.
In September, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia formalized a mutual defense pact, with Saudi Arabia, a wealthy oil-producing nation, providing economic aid to Pakistan for years. The agreement also signifies Pakistan’s deeper military involvement with Saudi Arabia, especially in light of ongoing regional tensions.
Amidst the broader US-Iran conflict, Iran has continued launching attacks on neighboring countries, including Saudi Arabia. Pakistan’s current role remains defensive, but the possibility of being drawn into wider conflict exists, prompting Pakistan to mediate between the US and Iran.
Recent talks in Pakistan, led by US Vice President J.D. Vance, ended without resolution. Iran rejected US proposals, with Vance stating, “They were not willing to accept our terms.” He emphasized the need for Iran to commit to not developing nuclear weapons, while both Iran and the US accused each other of unrealistic demands.
