Apr 13, Kathmandu - The escalating conflict between the United States and Iran has taken a dangerous new turn, threatening to ignite a regional and global crisis. Following failed high-level talks in Islamabad, the U.S. announced a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf, raising fears of a severe disruption to worldwide energy supplies and economies.
After the Islamabad negotiations ended without resolution, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered stringent measures against Iran. Accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear program, Trump revealed that from 7:45 PM tonight, all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports in the Arabian and Omani Gulf regions will be subjected to a blockade. However, ships heading towards non-Iranian ports are expected to face no restrictions.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. Navy will enforce a blockade on ships passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor. He also issued a stern warning of a strong response to any Iranian retaliation, having previously threatened to take full control of the region.
Iran dismissed the U.S. announcement as "ridiculous" and warned of retaliatory measures. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards claim full control over the Hormuz Strait, and Foreign Minister Abdollahian accused the U.S. of changing its stance at the last minute to impose the blockade, as negotiations approached a critical point.
The announcement has triggered a surge in global oil prices, with Brent and WTI crude reaching around $100 per barrel. Given that a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes through the Gulf, this blockade is poised to intensify the energy crisis worldwide.
Since late February, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives, with Israel and the U.S. conducting strikes on Iran. Despite Pakistan’s efforts to mediate and call for a ceasefire, the maritime blockade has diminished hopes for peace in the region.
Experts warn that this blockade is more than just pressure—it could escalate regional hostilities into a more destructive and widespread conflict, with ripple effects threatening global stability.
