Iran Condemns U.S. Naval Blockade, Urges UN Action to Protect Sovereignty

Apr 14, Kathmandu - Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, has strongly condemned the recent actions of the U.S. military, accusing Washington of violating Iran's sovereignty. He called on the United Nations to take decisive action against American forces for their perceived misconduct.

Iravani stated that the United States has infringed upon Article 2, Clause 4 of the UN Charter by declaring Iran a terrorist entity and by imposing an illegal blockade that breaches international maritime laws. He emphasized that these measures, such as restricting maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, are attempts to interfere with Iran's sovereign rights and violate international law.

Iran has rejected and condemned these illegal acts, asserting its inherent right to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests. The ambassador warned that the U.S. actions are irresponsible and negatively impact regional and international peace and security, and called for immediate international intervention.

In his letter to the UN, Iravani urged the Security Council to condemn the blockade and to take steps to de-escalate tensions. He highlighted ongoing violations of international law by the U.S. and stressed the need for accountability.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that at least 15 U.S. warships remain deployed in the Middle East, following orders from President Donald Trump, with sources suggesting these vessels could participate in enforcing the maritime blockade of Iran’s ports. This move follows unsuccessful diplomatic talks in Pakistan and signifies a heightened U.S. military presence in the region.
