Apr 16, Kathmandu - FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence that Iran will compete in this year's World Cup in the United States, despite ongoing political tensions between the two nations. Speaking at an event in Washington, Infantino emphasized that sports and politics should remain separate and called for Iran's participation in the tournament.
"We hope the situation remains peaceful until the World Cup, but Iran must come and play," Infantino stated.
Relations between the US and Iran are currently strained, with former US President Donald Trump describing Iran’s participation as "inappropriate" and raising concerns about player safety. Iran’s Sports Minister previously announced that the country would not participate in the World Cup following the assassination of a top leader, and requested FIFA to relocate their matches from the US to Mexico. However, FIFA rejected the request.
Iran is scheduled to play two group stage matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, with large Iranian communities in both cities. The group also includes Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt, with matches planned for June 15 and 21 in Los Angeles and June 26 in Seattle.
Historically, Iran and the US have faced off in football with notable matches, including Iran’s 2-1 victory over the US in the 1998 World Cup and the US’s 1-0 win over Iran in 2022.
While Iran’s final decision remains uncertain, FIFA has made it clear that it is determined to have Iran on the field. The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, starting June 11.
