Apr 17, Kathmandu - The Nepali Congress has decided to back candidates from UML and CPN (UML) for the chairmanship elections of two major parliamentary committees. The party has directed its MPs to vote for opposition candidates in the elections for the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee, as well as the Joint Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of State Policies, Principles, and Responsibilities.
Guru Baral from UML has filed his candidacy for the Education Committee chair, while Madan Kumari Shah from CPN (UML) is vying for the chair of the Joint Committee. The ruling coalition's candidates, Ojaswi Sherchan and Ganesh Karki, are also contesting these positions, securing nearly two-thirds of the votes within their alliance. However, opposition parties have fielded their own candidates for both committees.
Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee's chairmanship has been left open by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which has received support from both UML and CPN (UML). As per the consensus reached in an opposition meeting yesterday, each party has nominated candidates for the respective committees.
