Apr 18, Kathmandu - Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is preparing to lay off about 8,000 of its employees by the next month. This is about 10 percent of Meta's total global workforce, according to a Reuters report.
According to the news, the first phase of staff reductions will begin on May 20. The company plans to cut more employees in the second half of the year. However, the exact date and number have not yet been decided.
The company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg took this step to make Meta focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and increase efficiency. As many tasks are being automated with the development of AI, the company has adopted a strategy to get more results from fewer employees.
Not only Meta, but other large technology companies such as Amazon and Block have also laid off thousands of employees this year, citing increased efficiency due to AI.
According to statistics, more than 73,000 employees in the technology sector around the world have lost their jobs in the first four months of 2026. Meta currently employs about 79,000 employees.
