Apr 19, Kathmandu - Infrastructure development projects in Chitwan are facing significant delays, with 125 contracts at a standstill due to escalating fuel prices and rising costs of essential materials. The Infrastructure Development Office of Chitwan reports that out of 267 planned projects, 217 are currently underway, but a substantial number are now at risk of being halted.
Office Chief Birendra Kumar Chaudhary explained that the increase in fuel prices and issues related to bitumen shortages have severely impacted ongoing projects. "Contractors have submitted requests for a 'construction holiday'—a temporary suspension of work—due to these economic pressures," Chaudhary stated.
The surge in fuel costs has led to widespread price hikes across sectors, further hampering infrastructure development. Despite 50 projects being managed by consumer committees and ongoing work on 19 bridges and various road projects, progress has slowed considerably.
Chaudhary warned that if the current situation persists, 50 to 60 percent of the projects initiated by the office may remain incomplete. The office is committed to continuing work within the allocated budget of NPR 67 crore, in line with government directives.
Secretary General Pushkar Adhikari of the Chitwan Construction Association highlighted that contractors are unable to proceed under current conditions. "With rising prices, it’s crucial for the government to declare a construction holiday to provide relief," he emphasized. Adhikari also called for budget adjustments or state intervention to address the escalating costs and prevent further delays.
