Cyber Scam Gang Active in Kailali and Kanchanpur: Victims Lured Through Online Gaming, One Arrested

Apr 20, Kathmandu - Authorities in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts have identified a rising trend of online scams orchestrated by a criminal gang operating across the regions. The gang reportedly lures victims through online gaming platforms, deceiving them into paying large sums of money.

Following a complaint from a woman in Bedkot Municipality, who claimed to have been duped online, police uncovered the scam network. Based on her report, authorities arrested 25-year-old Subash Bhat from Godawari Municipality-1, Kailali, with further investigations ongoing.

Bhat was taken into custody last Friday with the assistance of the Sukhad Area Police Office. He is currently being held at the District Police Office in Kanchanpur on charges related to online fraud. Police have registered a case against him and are expanding their investigation.

According to reports, the scam involves convincing victims they have won large sums of money through online games on Facebook. The fraudsters then demand an initial payment—initially claiming it’s a tax or fee—to release the winnings. Victims, including Bhat, transferred amounts totaling over NPR 200,000 via mobile banking, only to realize later that they had been scammed.

Sources reveal that a large-scale online scam gang is active, with members ranging from local traders in Attaria to influential political figures. The gang’s operations extend from Kailali to Kathmandu, indicating a widespread network.

Authorities believe that thorough investigation into Bhat’s activities could help dismantle the entire criminal ring. Kanchanpur Police have assured that they will conduct a detailed probe to bring all involved to justice.

District Police Chief SP Khadak Bahadur Khatri stated, “We will investigate thoroughly and ensure that all those involved in this scam are prosecuted according to the law.”
