Global Conflict Sparks Surge in Poverty: Over 30 Million at Risk, UN Development Chief Warns

Apr 23, Kathmandu - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Chief has warned that due to the ongoing effects of the Iran conflict, more than 30 million people worldwide are at risk of falling back into poverty.

He explained that the situation has been exacerbated by disruptions in the supply of fuel and chemical fertilizers, which have occurred just as farmers are preparing for the planting season.

Additionally, the blockade of cargo ships at the Hormuz Strait has worsened fertilizer shortages, leading to a decline in agricultural productivity, according to UNDP Chief and former Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo in an interview with Reuters.
