NCP UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet Denounces Police Action Against Wife Amid Protest Clashes

Apr 27, Kathmandu - CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has expressed his objection to the police arresting his wife, Ambika Basnet.

Police have taken Ambika Basnet, including eight people, into custody after a clash in Maitighar Mandala on Monday.

Ambika Basnet and some others have been taken into custody by the police on charges of assaulting Shova Pathak, who was protesting in Maitighar Mandala. Pathak, who was injured in the clash, has been sent to Bir Hospital for treatment, according to the District Police Range, Kathmandu.

According to SP Pawan Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, seven people have been taken into custody and kept in the Bhadrakali Police Range on charges of being involved in the incident.

Reacting on social media after the incident, UML Secretary Basnet has alleged that his wife was assaulted and instead arrested.

He said that while he was going to the Cyber ​​Bureau to file a complaint against cybercrime, some people abused and assaulted him while watching the crowd in the Maitighar area, but instead the police arrested eight people, including his wife.

Basnet has expressed dissatisfaction with some media outlets for presenting the incident in a 'misleading' manner. He has also accused Maitighar Mandala of being 'a place for character assassination'.

Shova Pathak has long been demanding action against Mahesh Basnet, accusing her of raping her. Recently, she was on the protest at Maitighar demanding the reinstatement of former Home Minister Sudan Gurung. Police say that a clash took place during the protest.

Basnet has demanded that the government conduct a fair investigation into the incident and take action against the culprits. Otherwise, he has warned of strong resistance.
