Demonstration at Maitighar Against the Movie 'Lalibazar'

May 09, Kathmandu - Protesters gathered at Maitighar Mandala on Saturday to demand the suspension of the Nepali film "Lalibazar," claiming it undermines community respect and calls for the film's immediate ban. Participants held placards with slogans such as "Ban Lalibazar," "Respect for All Communities," and "Down with the Film Development Board."

Dr. Roshni Nepali Wadi, a protester, expressed her frustration over what she perceives as a miscarriage of justice. She said, "We went to court for justice, but the court's decision on the 23rd left us feeling that justice is now for sale. Despite the government’s apologies in Parliament, we have not received justice, which is why we are protesting on the streets."

She further added that the next hearing for the case is scheduled for Monday and clarified, "The case is before the Supreme Court. After discussions, we will know the outcome. This case was filed solely to shut down 'Lalibazar' — it is not about editing or changing scenes."

Nepali Vadi also criticized claims that the story was written by the production team after consulting the community, calling such assertions untrue.
