May 16, Kathmandu - Bhimeshwor Municipality-2 has initiated a community-level tuberculosis (TB) testing program aimed at early detection of the disease. Organized by the Dolakha district branch of the Nepal Tuberculosis Control Program, the event involved collecting and testing stool samples from local residents.
Officials believe that reaching out to the community directly will reduce the tendency of TB patients to hide their illness and facilitate early diagnosis. Tirtha Bahadur Joshi, chairman of the Dolakha district branch of the Nepal Tuberculosis Control Program, emphasized that TB remains a significant health challenge in society. "Rather than hiding TB, it is essential to diagnose and treat it promptly," he said. "Our goal is to identify TB early through stool testing and not let the disease go unnoticed."
Despite ongoing awareness efforts, rural communities still face a lack of knowledge about TB, social stigma, and the tendency to conceal symptoms, which delays timely medical intervention. To address this, the program aims to raise awareness and identify potential patients within the community.
Delineating the importance of early detection, Dilendra Budha, head of the Dolakha Public Health Office, urged residents to seek testing if they experience symptoms such as persistent cough for more than two weeks, night sweats, loss of appetite, or weight loss. He stressed that TB is curable if diagnosed early and urged people not to delay seeking medical help.
Highlighting the government's commitment, officials stated that various programs are in place to control and reduce TB. Community-based testing initiatives like this play a crucial role in early diagnosis and treatment. "TB patients should not be ostracized but supported through treatment and encouragement," they added.
