May 17, Kathmandu - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his support for the extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel for an additional 45 days. He emphasized that this step is crucial for maintaining peace along the border region and alleviating the suffering of affected civilians.
In a statement released by the UN Secretariat, Guterres reaffirmed his backing for all efforts to end the conflict, urging special attention to the safety of communities residing in the border areas and to humanitarian assistance. The UN established this border line in 2000 to demarcate the boundary.
The Secretary-General called on all parties involved to fully respect the ceasefire, refrain from further attacks, and adhere to international laws and humanitarian principles. He highlighted the importance of restraint and dialogue for regional peace, stability, and mutual understanding.
The UN also reaffirmed its ongoing support for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006 to end hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.
While the extension of the ceasefire is expected to bring some relief and stability to the border region, the international community cautioned that the situation remains sensitive, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful initiatives.
