May 18, Kathmandu - Morang-3 Member of Parliament Ganesh Karki has expressed concerns that laws have been unjustly applied in practice regarding land issues in his constituency. Speaking during the parliament session on Monday, he highlighted the longstanding problems faced by landless and displaced communities in his area.
Karki stated, "Over 40 years ago, during land redistribution, some areas were allocated to others, and in some cases, individuals listed their names but remained on old land, while new settlements could not be established. Poor and marginalized groups settled there, only to see their land titles issued to others after years of waiting. In some cases, land that was cultivated by one person was registered in someone else's name. Over generations, both land titles and land sales have been carried out separately, making it impossible to identify the true owners and victims."
He further criticized the judicial and municipal authorities, saying, "The laws have been unjust in practice."
Karki accused political opportunists of fueling conflicts over land issues in Morang-3, stating, "People exploiting these issues to serve political agendas have only intensified the problem. This has become a source of community disputes."
He emphasized that the current framework across Nepal cannot resolve the land problems in Morang-3. Karki appealed through the Speaker of Parliament, "I request this House that when discussions about land issues in Morang-3 arise, no one should remain unaware or indifferent. Those responsible for understanding and addressing the issues should do so without delay. Let’s resolve this matter. I urge everyone to act swiftly."
