Foreign Ministry Apologizes for Incorrect Information on Nepali Citizen Amrit Jha's Release from Iranian Custody

May 18, Kathmandu - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an apology for providing incorrect information regarding the release of Nepali citizen Amrit Jha from Iranian detention.

The ministry expressed regret over the confusion and inconvenience caused by the dissemination of unofficial information suggesting that Jha had been released while his case was still under consideration in court.

“The Ministry apologizes for the confusion and inconvenience caused by the unofficial announcement of Jha’s release while his case is still pending in an Iranian local court and he remains in custody,” the ministry stated. “According to the latest information, a team of experts appointed to prepare a report for an expert opinion is currently submitting their report to the court.”

The ministry also assured that ongoing diplomatic efforts are being made to ensure a fair hearing in Jha’s case. According to the ministry, Jha was detained along with six other foreigners for alleged illegal smuggling and trafficking.

Before the escalation of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28, 2026, Iranian security forces had detained Jha and other foreigners.

On April 15, Nepal’s honorary consul in Iran, Shaharama Shantei, informed Nepal’s acting ambassador in Qatar, Kumar Rai, about Jha’s release.

Based on this information, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, officials, and others were briefed. The ministry clarified that the information regarding Jha’s release was based on this communication.
