May 19, Kathmandu - The Ebola virus has claimed the lives of over 131 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, prompting international concern. According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 suspected cases have been reported so far. Congolese Health Minister confirmed that 131 individuals have died and 513 are infected.
The World Health Organization (WHO), under the United Nations, has declared the current Ebola outbreak, linked to the Bundibugyo virus, as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In neighboring Uganda, two confirmed cases have been reported, with one resulting in death. Among those infected in Congo is an American doctor, who is being prepared for transfer to Germany for treatment.
WHO has warned that the disease could spread further and has urged strict monitoring in border regions. Rwanda has intensified border checks, while Nigeria has increased surveillance efforts.
Due to the absence of effective medication or approved vaccines, health authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to strict health protocols. Special caution is also advised during the funeral processes of the infected.
While over 20 Ebola outbreaks have occurred in Congo and Uganda, this is the third time the Bundibugyo strain has been identified. Cases have also been reported in Bunia, Goma, Mombwala, Butembo, and Nyakunde.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern in Geneva today, warning about the rapid spread and severity of the outbreak.
