Hearing of Proposed Chief Justice Manoj Sharma Continues in Parliamentary Committee

May 21, Kathmandu - The parliamentary committee hearings for Chief Justice Manoj Sharma are currently underway. Sharma is presenting his work plan before the committee.

A total of 16 complaints have been filed against Sharma, prompting the Federal Parliament’s Parliamentary Hearing Committee to call for these allegations to be reviewed.

On Baisakh 24, the Constitutional Council, with a majority vote, recommended Sharma for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. However, opposition MPs have expressed concerns over the hurried nature of the proceedings.

Opposition lawmakers criticized the committee for rushing the hearing without allowing them to read the complaints against Sharma. They argued that this haste undermines the transparency of the process.

Sharma was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in Baisakh 2076 (April-May 2019). During the hearing, some MPs questioned whether Sharma had adequately explained his work at the Supreme Court, which he was unable to do at the time.

Former UML MP Parvat Gurung remarked that Sharma’s presentation lacked energy, raising questions about his readiness for the top judicial position.
