May 22, Kathmandu - To address rising air pollution, increasing traffic congestion, and transportation challenges, the government has decided to suspend the registration of all new public vehicles across the country. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport issued a circular to offices under its jurisdiction and local levels, citing environmental and infrastructural concerns.
Until further notice, the registration of new public vehicles, including electric ones, has been temporarily halted. The circular states, “In the interest of public welfare and for the scientific management of public transportation in Nepal, the registration of new public vehicles shall be suspended until further notice, in accordance with Section 14 of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049. All relevant offices and municipalities are requested to comply.”
The government highlighted that the lack of systematic management of public transportation has led to severe traffic jams and mobility issues nationwide. Additionally, escalating fuel prices have further complicated the operation and management of public transit services.
Referring to Subsection 3 of Section 24 of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049, the circular notes that the Transport Department has the authority to suspend vehicle registration for public interest reasons—such as environmental pollution, traffic volume, road conditions, and transportation difficulties.
