May 30, Kathmandu - The government has prioritized the Dalit community in its upcoming fiscal year budget, including a formal apology for past injustices. This year, three new programs have been introduced to uplift and empower the marginalized group.
A nationwide campaign against untouchability and discrimination is set to be launched, with the government committing to create a more equitable, civilized, and culturally rich society through a comprehensive anti-discrimination drive at the national level.
Additionally, efforts will be made to preserve and promote the traditional skills, arts, and occupations of the Dalit community. Model homestays will be established in densely populated Dalit settlements across Madhesh, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. This initiative aims to support local culture and boost tourism.
Furthermore, the government has doubled the nutrition allowance for Dalit children. Currently receiving NPR 532 per month, five-year-old Dalit children will now receive NPR 1,000 monthly. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle announced an allocation of NPR 3 billion for this program.
Presently, the government distributes nutrition allowances to Dalit children under the age of five across the country, aiming to improve their health and well-being.
