Actress Madhuri Dixit also falls victim to 'AI deepfake'

May 30, Kathmandu - Renowned Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit has recently become the target of a misleading deepfake video, highlighting the growing threat of artificial intelligence (AI) misuse. The viral clip shows Madhuri dressed in a black outfit, sparking widespread speculation and negative comments on social media. However, authorities have confirmed that the video is entirely AI-generated and fake.

Indian journalist Jaideep Pandey clarified on social media that the video was manipulated using AI technology, emphasizing that it is a fabricated piece designed to deceive viewers. Following the viral spread of the clip, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) issued a community note, confirming the video’s artificial origins and warning users against misinformation.

This incident is part of a broader trend where prominent artists and celebrities are falling victim to AI-generated fake content. Previously, actresses such as Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and Keerthi Suresh faced similar deepfake scams. Most recently, South Indian actress Rukmini Vasanth expressed her outrage after AI-created fake images and videos using her likeness circulated online.

The phenomenon gained global attention in November 2023 when a deepfake video of actress Rashmika Mandanna went viral, showing her entering an elevator dressed in black. The investigation revealed that the original footage was of a British-Indian social influencer, Zara Patel, whose face was replaced with Rashmika’s using AI deepfake technology.

Experts warn that the increasing sophistication of AI-generated content poses serious challenges to digital authenticity, underscoring the need for enhanced awareness and verification measures to combat misinformation in the digital age.
