Govt Spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel Defends Prime Minister Balendra Shah's Remarks in Parliament

Jun 02, Kathmandu - Government Spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel has come to the defense of Prime Minister Balendra Shah's statements made in Parliament regarding border issues with India.

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Pokharel clarified the government’s stance on the matter raised by Balen Shah in Parliament.

“I am surprised to hear that Nepal has occupied Indian territory, as such claims originated from Delhi,” he stated. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already issued an appropriate statement regarding this.”

He further explained that both neighboring countries are working through established committees to resolve longstanding border disputes. “There are old committees dedicated to border issues, and the Prime Minister has also addressed this,” he added. “India has sent a note regarding the border dispute, and Nepal has responded accordingly. The Prime Minister reported that Nepal’s border has been encroached upon while working to resolve these issues.”

Pokharel also touched on cross-border applications, suggesting that Indian border areas could include parts of Nepal, and vice versa. However, she did not specify the locations where Nepal claims violations took place.

“The Prime Minister said he was surprised by these claims,” Pokharel remarked. “He is accountable to the Parliament, and if necessary, he will speak there. There is no doubt that border disputes should be resolved through dialogue. The Foreign Ministry handles diplomatic efforts related to these issues.”
