Jun 05, Kathmandu - In a swift move to address concerns over potential tax evasion, the Nepal Armed Police Force has formed a special committee to conduct a detailed investigation into 779 electric vehicles recently seized from various locations across the country.
Under the direct instruction of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, a joint investigation committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Customs Department, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force has been established to ensure transparency and accountability.
According to Dipa Dahal, a spokesperson and press officer for Prime Minister Balen Shah, the government remains vigilant in safeguarding revenue and promoting good governance. "A committee has been promptly formed to investigate the matter thoroughly and initiate legal procedures. The investigation has already begun on-site to identify the vehicles involved," Dahal stated.
She further emphasized the complexity of the case, stating, “Given the large number of vehicles involved, it may take some time to meticulously examine and verify all legal documents and customs paperwork. We request patience and confidence until the investigation concludes. The government is committed to strengthening the economy and enforcing the law.”
According to Shailendra Thapa, Deputy Superintendent of Nepal Armed Police Force and spokesperson, the seized vehicles—725 from Korala Checkpoint in Mustang, 2 from Pasang Lhamu Highway in Nuwakot, and 2 from Adamghat in Dhading—were apprehended based on suspicion of tax evasion and specific intelligence reports.
Thapa clarified that, despite the vehicles having cleared customs, they were re-controlled for cross-checking based on confidential intelligence to protect state revenue. He condemned false rumors spread by some media outlets, stating, “This is a routine and precautionary process. We regret any misinformation caused by unverified reports.”
The Armed Police Force assured that any vehicles that have completed all legal and customs procedures will not be detained, urging legitimate business operators to remain calm and compliant.
